Watch Out! Your Protein Bar Could Be Just As Bad to Eat As a Candy Bar
These include various synthetic substances, processed fats that are actually detrimental to your health and fitness goals. When choosing one of the many products of this type, what is the best way to tell if it is nutritional garbage or if it is actually healthy? To do this you must check the labels just as you would do with other food options at the supermarket.
The blatant facts are that most of these bars are worthless. They might as well be called candy with a deceptive label. Let me tell you about a personal experience that happened not so long ago. One of my friends went with me to go cycling and I was concerned about having enough energy.
He gave me a very popular bar he had. These things are promoted as being helpful for weight loss. I took a look at the label and quickly learned that these are so void of nutritional value that a candy bar would be an improvement!
Just check out the top ingredients that were nothing but sugars and dangerous Trans fat carrying oils! Then there were other harmful components such as artificial flavoring, colors, and sweeteners, more Trans fat laden oils, and some deathly soy protein isolate. Besides the horrible nutrition in the bar, it tasted awful! This bar was a good example of food engineering gone awry.
With experiences like this everywhere, how can you tell if the health bar you are considering is healthy or not? For starters, look for simplicity. Some of the most nutritional bars (best tasting too!) have just a few natural ingredients in them. Here are a couple of my preferred choices:
Organic Food brand bars. This brand combines seeds with organic sprouts and natural rice protein to form an excellent source of energy and nutrition. They have a base of various nut butters and fruit as well (depending on the flavor). These also happen to taste great and come in a good variety. If you want to try these, look at your local health food stores, because most supermarkets do not carry them.
Larabars. This is another simple organic bar that usually contains a few natural raw ingredients. Various combinations of nuts and fruit offer the consumer a good variety of tastes while augmenting their health. Don’t look for chemicals and processed ingredients of this wrapper when you find this at your health food store!
Food bars have potential health benefits if you carefully select the good ones such as the two mentioned above. They are handy for when you are on the road and don’t have time to stop for a healthy meal. They also help keep you out of the terrible foods found in most vending machines.
